Get ready for more bumpy rides due to Climate Change

Climate change will lead to bumpier flights caused by increased mid-air turbulence, according to an analysis by scientists of the impact of global warming on weather systems over the next four decades. The increasing air turbulence results from the impact of climate change on the jet streams, the fast, mile-wide winds that whistle round the planet at the same altitude as airliners.

TERRE team visited Campus of Yashavantrao Chavan Institute of Science
Satara :TERRE team visited Campus of YCIS (Yashavantrao Chavan Institute of Science) Satara, State of Maharshtra, India to discuss the actions to make the Institute's campus more energy efficient. The present electricity consumption cost for the campus exceeds couple of lakhs of Indian Rupees (one lakh is equal to 100,000). TERRE and YCIS agreed to explore the area of saving this cost.

Apart from saving the energy cost for the campus of YCIS, the awareness on practical measures for improving the energy efficiency in university campuses would help young students to take up similar measures in their professional career later. Hence the initiative of TERRE and YCIS has far reaching positive impacts" said Rajendra Shende, Chairman of TERRE Policy Centre.

Faculty and students of YCIS are known for their innovative responses for the social and environmental problems. We are willing to explore the project on reducing the energy consumption in the YCIS campus in Satara', Said Dr. Arvind Burungale, Secretary of Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, parent organization of YCIS.

TERRE in cooperation with Princeton University, USA is proposing to organize a seminar in Satara on the subject in month of May 2013.
 
TERRE meets Infosys.....
They join hands together for environmental Awareness!!!
Pune, Thursday 7th March 2013 : TERRE Policy Centre was invited by the voluntary group of employees of the Sustainability Unit of Infosys, the second largest IT Company in India to discuss the most pressing environmental issues and the actions needed to address them. The interaction was initiated by Peter Winsley and Shridhar Karandikar from the Sustainability Unit and Vinita Apte of TERRE Policy Centre.

Rajendra Shende, Chairman of TERRE made a brief presentation giving overview of urgent issues that needs the attention and action. He then presented what TERRE has been doing over last two years to address those key issues particularly related to Energy and Food Secuirty. ‘The mantra of TERRE is -to think is good but to act is better’, said Mr. Shende.

Ecocide - An encounter with Environmental Crime
Paris, 10 Dec 2012 : TERRE Policy Centre today released a second policy recommendation related to the necessity of taking stronger action under international environmental law for environmental damages. "The principle of 'loss and damages' agreed by the government negotiators in United Nations Climate Change meeting in Doha is the right step forward. However, there is a need to look at the other means available in the international community to introduce deterrent mechanisms against the environmental loss and damages", said Rajendra Shende, Chairman, TERRE Policy Centre.

Bio rights : Innovative mechanism for Resource Mobilization
Hyderabad, 16 Oct 2012 : TERRE Policy Centre and South Asian Forum for Environment (SAFE) released an evidence-based policy paper today on ‘Bio-Rights’ an innovative mechanism that enhances biodiversity through improving the livelihood of the local community. 193 signatory countries to the Convention of Biodiversity, (CBD) after having miserably failed to meet 2010 target of significantly reducing the rate of biodiversity, are entering the final stage of the negotiations at COP11 here in Hyderabad.

Pairs, 11th June 2012 : “It is not just climate change but violent social change and military led political change also cause irreversible damages to the environment. Arab Springs may not prove to be the real springs in the nature. Race on Road to Rio is getting closer
2012 will be yet another milestone on the march towards sustainable development. 20 years back, in 1992, the world leaders chartered the path towards the sustainable world in the global blue print called “Agenda 21". It also established the climate change, biodiversity and desertification treaties as well as a forum on forests. The world has already marked and celebrated Rio+5, Rio+10 and now it will be Rio+20. Numbers are increasing with the word "Rio". What about the outcome?
