National Conference on Recent Trends in Botany
The conference, organised by Rayat Shikshan Sanstha's Yashwantrao Chavhan Institute of Science (Satara) took place on 18th and 19th January 2013.Dr. Rajendra Shende delivered the Keynote Address on Ecosystem and Sustainable Development. Eminent Speakers from institutions like University of Delhi, NCL Pune, University of Agricultural Sciences Bangaluru, Ruia College Mumbai also shared their thoughts on various topics at the conference. |

Geography of Change: Contemporary Issues in Development, Environment and Society

"Ecosystems and Sustainable development" at annual event for Non-Resident Indians (NRI) - Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas (PBD) in Kochi, Kerala, India (8-10 Dec 2013)
Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated each year by Ministry of External Affairs, since 2003. This year the event was held in Kochi, Kerala. Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated the event.
A special issue was released on the occassion, which includes Dr. Shende's article - Back to Nature...

Save the Western Ghats 2012
Save the Western Ghats Conclave was organised by AERF from 30th Nov to 2nd Dec 2012 at Mahabaleshwar (India). TERRE was a part of the conference to support the cause of sustainability of Western Ghats.The conference saw participation from the entire Western Ghats belt including the states of Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Apart from the engaging discussions, the local food festival was a highlight. Vinitaa Apte (President, TERRE) facilitated the valedictory session at the conclave. |

Convention on Biological Diversity
Convention on Biological Diversity was conceived as a result of global concern over loss of biodiversity. With participation from 193 countries, CBD is a comprehensive global agreement.India is hosted the 11th Conference of Parties for CBD, in Hyderabad from 1st-19th October 2012. The event saw participation from over 8000 delegates from all over the world. The event was organised by TERRE Policy Centre which facilitated discussion on the innovative financing mechanism of Bio-rights, which aims at dealing with poverty alleviation and environmental conservation at the same time. The idea is to provide financial assistance, to locals, for utilizing natural resources in a sustainable manner. Among the 188 World Natural Heritage Sites declared by the UN, the Western Ghats can be considered as the hottest of the hot spots for biodiversity. Sites like these are also important from the point of view of sustainable development, with the help of local communities. Locals can play a pivotal role in preserving, conserving and developing these sites and bringing about grass-root sustainability.

Environment through my LenseNasik, 9th August 2012, Rajendra Shende, Chariman TERRE Policy Centre inugurated the International Photo-Exhibitionon of the selected entries for the competition titled 'Environment through my Lense' in City of Nasik (Maharashtra) about 200 KMs from Mumbai. It was organized as part of Kirloskar-Vasundhara International Film Festival . More than 8000 entries were received from all over the world from which the best 125 were exhibited along with Award Winning photos. While inuagurating the exhibition, Mr. Shende said, "Visual art like photographs have the power of communicating not only messages on environmental protection but also invoke the actions to address the problem. Today, when 60% of the world's natural resources are degraded irriversably, we need such action oriented communication". |

Restoration of Kamandalu : a rivuletDate 29th April at Rahimatpur, Maharashtra, India A Thousand hands worked together to restore the rivulet called Kamandalu on 29th April in Rahimatpur, Maharashtra, India. This unified efforts supported by TERRE Policy Centre and Media group of Sakal News papers resulted in cleaning the whole patch of rivulet within a day.
